The Treasury of Lives

The Second Zhabdrung Karpo, Lodro Gyatso (zhabs drung dkar po 02 blo gros rgya mtsho) was born in 1610, the son of a Tumed Mongol leader named Holochi (ho lo chi).

The Fourth Paṇchen Lama, Lobzang Chokyi Gyeltsen (paN chen bla ma 04 blo bzang chos kyi rgyal mtshan, 1570-1662) recognized him, at the age of three, as the reincarnation of the First Zhabdrung Karpo, Tsoknyi Gyatso (zhabs drung dkar po 01 tshogs gnyis rgya mtsho, d.u.), also known as the First Lamo.

He studied with the Paṇchen Lama and Shar Kelden Gyatso, the First Rongwo Drubchen (rong bo drub chen 01 shar skal ldan rgya mtsho) of Rongwo Monastery.

He founded Magur Namgyel Ling (rma mgur rnam rgyal gling) in Chentsa (gcan tsha) and built a monastic college there for some three hundred monks.

On the order of the Fifth Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobzang Gyatso (ta la'i bla ma 05 ngag dbang blo bzang rgya mtsho, 1617-1682), Lodro Gyatso successfully settled a dispute between the Khalka (hal ha) and Oirat Mongols. As a reward he was given the title Tsakan Nominhan (tsha kan no min han). He also settled a longstanding dispute between two villages in western Bayan (then part of Gcan tsha, now Hualong County) named Bayan (ba yan) and Khagang (kha sgang), and as a result Gechuk (dge phyug) monastery and the villages it controlled submitted to his administration.

In the fifth year of his reign the Shunzhi Emperor (r. 1643-1661) praised his achievements and presented him with a seal with the title, Jasak (ja sag).

He constructed large and elaborate reliquary stupas for both Gushri Khan (1582-1655) and the Qing Emperor Huang Taiji (皇太極r. 1626-1643) at Garzhung (sgar gzhung). These were both destroyed in 1958.

In 1659, he passed away in Magur Namgyel Ling. A reliquary was constructed at Garzhung.
