Rong Jamchen Chode, located in the Rong Valley of Rinpung County, was founded in 1367 by Zhonnu Gyelchok with the patronage of the Rinpung Prince Norbu Zangpo. Though established as a Sakya institution, it later became associated with Geluk teachings; an estimated 1,500 Sakya and Geluk monks were in residence during the early twentieth century. Though an assembly hall has been reconstructed in recent times, there are also ruins of the original complex.
